General info about Santorini
Santorini is the most
famous island of Greece. Santorini is the most southern
island of the Cycladic group in the Aegean Sea and is
located 63 nautical miles north of Crete.
It is made up of five islands:
Santorini
(Thira) is the main island and around it
Thirasia and Aspronisi (parts of the ancient Strogili)
and the two volcanic islands Palea Kameni and Nea Kameni.
Until about 1645 BC Santorini was one island
called Strogili (circle in Greek), but then the middle
of the island erupted and formed a volcano now named

Geography
Santorini
is a complex of overlapping shield volcanoes. The island location is
36.4N, 25.4E and the elevation is 1,850 feet (564 m). It is 80 sq.
km. South East Greece, in the Aegean Sea; one of the Cyclades
islands. Some of the cliff is thought to be a
caldera wall associated with an eruption
21,000 year ago. Santorini's population last measured in 2002 was
11.000 people.
According to tradition, Santorini was first settled by Phoenicians
and later by Laconians under the leader Thera. In 631 B.C. colonists
from the island founded Cyrene in N Africa. From the Middle Ages
until the 20th cent. Thira was known as Santorin, for St. Irene, the

The weather is nice and sunny during the tourist
season, from April to September. Santorini has only a very few cloudy
days before September.

some days the weather is so clear that, you can even see the the
mountains of
Crete
island,
depending
on the humidity of the atmosphere, ( The island of Crete is 80

Attractions
Santorini is one of the most famous islands in the
world. A unique, crescent shaped, island formed by
an ancient volcanic eruption said to have taken
place in 1650 BC and with the most breathtaking
views in all the Greek islands. The inner edge of
the island plunges almost 900 feet into the sea and
the outer coast has long black volcanic beaches.
Thira, the capital, is perched above towering cliffs
and connected to the harbor below by a winding path
of steps. Its whitewashed houses are constantly
